A Staggering Beef Recall in the United States Came Down Today

by Joi on February 17, 2008

The USDA just ordered the largest beef recall in the United States ev-er.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered a recall of 143 million pounds of beef from a Southern California slaughterhouse where employees are accused of mistreating cattle.

A USDA spokesman said that investigators have found no cases of illness related to the recalled meat.

But another expert pointed out that there was a “remote probability” that the meat from this California Meat Packing Company could cause illness in humans.

Get this: The amount of beef recalled is 143 million pounds. According to CNN, that’s roughly enough for two hamburgers for each man, woman and child in the United States.

Sunday’s recall is termed a “Class II” recall. Under a Class II, authorities believe there is little risk of illness.
