Buttermilk Sugar Cookies

1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
4 cups flour
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream the shortening and sugar well. Add eggs one at a time. Add buttermilk.

Sift flour, nutmeg and baking soda several times. Add flour to other mixture in small amounts.

Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 - 10 minutes.

I have to thank a visitor to Buttermilk Press for the above recipe. She was looking for a Buttermilk Sugar Cookie recipe - and I never even knew one existed….and me, the queen of buttermilk!!!

I dug deep into my cookbook collection and voila, found the gem above.

I’ll be taking these for a test drive this weekend. ;)

Buttermilk squares was once commercially available to consumers. They were called
squares because that was their shape. It was about four inch square crisp cookie that was the best “botten cookie” you could eat with a class of cold milk. I don’t remember if they were make by Mother’s Cookies or Grandma’s Cookies.
Unfortunately, they have disappeared from the market. I don’t know when or why that happened.

I remember consuming them as a kid in the 1950s. My mother, who is now in her
nineties remembers that they were available in bulk in general stores (predecessors to supermarkets) when she
was a child. So there around for a long time. I wish some commercial bakery would bring them back!

This is the recipe that my great-grandmother made for my father. who loved to dunk his cookies in milk.
I would really appreciate it if you would let me know what cookbook you found this recipe in and it’s copyright date. I’d love to be able to document it’s origin.

My mom used to make these and put cocoa in them for chocolate sugar cookies, then she would frost the bottom, half with white icing, half with chocolate frosting……voila! Half Moon Cookies! MMM MMM Good!

Chuck, I agree, I think they’d be a hit. I love these types of recipes that are nostalgic. They sort of take you back to a simpler time. These make me think of my grandmother in the kitchen cooking while my Barbies and I waited patiently nearby.

Lydia - you’re MORE than welcome! It was actually on a page that was running lose in one of the goldie oldie recipe books from my grandmother. I’ll look through the entire collection this afternoon and see which book it came from.

“Granny” was so funny with her cookbooks and recipes….she’d just rip one right out of the book if she used it a lot - then she’d shove it into whatever one was handy.

I’m 100 percent sure I can find which one she snatched it from, though!
