There are a lot of tips I recommend over and over to cooks who are looking to make their entire cooking experience better – from using real butter instead of margarine (98 percent of the time) to the delights of cooking with buttermilk as often as possible. Another tip I always throw out there is to use salt and pepper mills instead of shakers.
If you’ve never used mills, you may, at the moment say, “Salt’s salt and pepper’s pepper,” and that’s true enough. However, just as there is a subtle yet preferable difference between freshly ground coffee beans and grounds – there is a noticable and preferable difference between salt and pepper that have been shaken onto a dish and salt and pepper that have been applied courtesy of a mill.
Besides that, how much classier do they look? There’s something about them that says, “I mean business in this kitchen!”
The Peugeot Fidgi 8 in. Black Matte Salt/Pepper Mill Set
(above) is one of the most graceful and modern mills I’ve found online. The beautiful matte black lacquer finish make them look like a fashion designer dressed them!
Delicious and fast snack: Cut up wedges of limes and lemons and place them on a plate. Using a salt mill, grind salt, let it “snow” over the wedges. Delicious – I promise!
