Slay the Flu With Elderberry

by Joi on December 5, 2005

New studies show that Elderberry fights influenza and speeds recovery.

Elderberry is nicknamed “the medicine chest of the common people” and it was held in very high esteem by Hippocrates and Dioscorides. Juice from the berries has long been used to bring relief for flu symptoms, colds, and sinus infections.

Elderberry seems to prevent the flu virus from latching on to cells. Anthocyanins are antioxidants that are found in purple fruits, such as elderberry. Anthocyanins seem to have an antinflammatory effect similar to aspirin. For this reason, people who are suffering from aches and pains report less achiness, pain and fever when using Elderberry.

Experts advise taking 3 teaspoons of elderberry extract four times a day at the first sign of flu symptoms. As always, read the bottle and/or box thoroughly and ask your pharmacist any questions you may have.
